Mac Pro:: ATI Radeon 4870 Compatibility List Oct 11, 2009 This a secondary thread of the ATI Radeon 4890 Compatibility List URL The goal of this thread is the same as the original thread, to give a proper list of what cards will and will not work on a Mac Pro. A quick recap for those too lazy (or without enough time) to read through that entire thread (please correct me if I misunderstood or have provided incorrect information, thanks): 1) Flashing will only work on REFERENCE CARDS (and only some reference cards for that matter), NOT overclocked or modified cards. 2) Dual DVI seems to work fine under Snowy (10.6.1), but your mileage may vary on older versions of Leopard depending on the card you are using. 3) Older versions of Sapphire and XFX seem to work, but newer revisions are being problematic. I read one instance of success with an HIS card.Diamond did not seem to work for that person (so he tried a HIS and it worked).

Similar Messages:. ADVERTISEMENT Oct 10, 2009 I've been lurking for far too long.so here goes my first post!

So I've read through the whole of Cindori's thread titled 'Ultimate Thread: 4890 in Mac Pro', trying to figure out exactly which Radeon 4890 would be a compatible and reliable solution for flashing to work on Snow Leopard 10.6.1, Mac Pro 1,1. To my disappointment, I'm more confused now than I was when I first started reading the thread. Because cards have gone through revisions and what was working then, now no longer works or has problems. Example: Sapphire cards seem to be what to look for since that was what Cindori used, but 'newer' Sapphire cards, even though they may look like reference cards, don't seem to work; older XFX cards worked (and only ZDFC from what I understand), but newer revisions no longer work, etc. Mar 19, 2009 Does anyone game on a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 4870?

I just got my ATI Radeon 4870 a few days ago for my Mac Pro '06. It works great. I am running 2 24' Dell monitors, one through DVI and one through a the minidisplay port with the mini to DVI converter I bought at Apple, and they run flawlessly.

How is the performance? Can it play most games? I'd be gaming at 1920x1200. Mar 16, 2009 I installed the OEM Radeon HD 4870 in a First Generation 'Clovertown' 3.0GHz 8-core Mac Pro. It's working.

This is the model I mean (see right column). I pulled the card from a Nehalem.) I booted from the drive that came with the Nehalem. (Easier than cloning the system or trying to get the drivers to copy over - which gave an error on boot.) It runs with no problems. I'm busily running 3D Game benchmarks which I will report back on later tonight or tomorrow morning. Jun 7, 2009 I only use my Mac Pro for Final Cut Studio not gaming. Jun 10, 2009 I bought the PC version of the ATI Radeon HD 4870 and flashed it with the mac ROM. Everything went fine.

I then moved the original card to slot 2 and put the new ATI card into slot one. I connected the monitor to the new ATI card and booted up.

I get the apple logo, but after that, my monitor loses signal. If i plug the monitor into the original card (which is now in slot 2), it works fine. The desktop shows up. Any ideas on what is going on here?

Is there anyway to check what hardware is installed in the computer? Any utilities? Oct 16, 2010 So I have a ATI Radeon HD 4870 on my Mac Pro and a 26' HDTV and I want to use it as my second display and utilize it's speakers (to watch movies while I work). Can I send audio through a mini display port to HDMI connector from this card or will i have to buy a secondary cable to plug into the audio out jack? Also are there syncing concerns with the two connections (hdmi and auto cable) Dec 1, 2009 I have a 1,1 Mac Pro. Am I going to see a good difference in performance? I mainly do motion graphics and Photoshop related tasks.

Gaming is secondary. Just wondering what your guys' thoughts are and if it's worth the price upgrade. Apr 10, 2010 So, I got a flashed ATI Radeon HD 4870 off eBay. It's running fine, but it revs for every little thing I do. Every time I scroll on a webpage. It's revving for every letter I type. The faster I type, the louder it gets.

If I watch a video, it runs at high speed. The X1900 XT was quiet compared to this thing. It's like it's set to run the fan as high as it can for every little thing that happens. What do I do? I also just tested it in WoW, and it was getting about 12FPS in Shattrath at full graphics. I think I remember my x1900 getting the same, if not better. Something's gotta be wrong. Now it's just constantly running its fans, and I'm not even doing anything.

I'm on my Macbook. My Mac Pro is just sitting there, nothing but the Finder.I'm also not happy with the speed it renders video compared to my dinosaur x1900 XT.

Not worth the upgrade. Could the ROM they flashed it with be bad? Apr 6, 2009 I recently just purchased one of the early 2008 Mac Pro Desktops, model number MA970LL/A and am trying to upgrade the video card in it. It comes standard with an ATI Radeon HD 2600 xt, and I would like to upgrade to an ATI Radeon HD 4870.

I don't know that it will work though, I know that the NVIDEA that comes standard in the early 2009 Mac Pro does not work in the early 2008 Model. Does anyone have any information on this or know if that will work? Mar 31, 2009 The ridiculously long thread title pretty much says it all.

Is it possible to buy one of Apple's ATI Radeon 4870 cards with the mini-display port connection, install them in a PC, and then use the LED Cinema Display with a PC? Oct 8, 2009 So I have an Early 2009 Octocore 2.93 and I have a flashed ATI Radeo HD 4870 video card that is supposed to work on a PC but its flashed so it works on a mac. I know its not officially supported but the issue im running into is that the operating system cannot recognize the full resolution the HP LP3065 30 inch display is capable of. The display can run up to 2560x1600 on any other system but not with my ten thousand dollar machine. The windows side can display at the full resolution but Snow Leopard can only run 1280x800 and it makes the OS look like a pile of dog. on sunday.

Anyone else run into this issue? Heres the link btw to where this guy shows how to flash the card. URL Jul 29, 2009 I bought HIS Radeon HD4870 512MB DDR5 for my Mac Pro 2006 1.1. The first problem I've found it that card will not fit to slot 1, because of too long screws. So I installed it in slot 2, leaving 7300GT in slot 1. The next problem was how to get rid of these power cables - I've tried the more elegant way taking that molex adapter under HDD trays, but cables where too short So I installed them on the right of Superdrive's tray. Now on Mac OS X I got kernel panic (probably the injector thing).

On Windows Vista card is detected, but automatically disabled (probably not enough power or just PCI-EX 1x slot is not compatible). Here are photos from the operation. I'll try to install Accelero S1 rev. 2 with Noctua 120 mm fan and will see how things go I've also ordered two special Apple PCI-EX power connectors from Austria.

Apr 22, 2007 Can someone tell me if I could put a ATI Radeon X1650 Pro graphics card in a 800 MHz PowerMac? I know that the PowerMac uses AGP, and that card is agp, so will it work? If it doesent, could you point me out to some cards that will? Aug 1, 2010 Any top-end 27 iMac owners (5750 GPU) have a little time to burn for someone who is jealous of you? In System Preferences Displays, Im wondering what the full list of Resolutions is. Sep 7, 2014 I want to connect a wireless Epson XP 510 printer. Installed drivers from the Epson website but they do not appear to be compatible according to the drop down list in the apple menu for adding a printer.

Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Epson XP 501 Apr 24, 2012 how I can go about syncing the two list that ITunes dj uses: 'source' and 'request'? I have a script that changes the source list, but don't know how to match the request list. Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3) Sep 4, 2014 I was reviewing audio books on my wish list and the list just became empty. I have stopped and restarted iTunes and I have manually re-logged into my apple account but the list keeps coming up empty. I have tried both the shortcut on the top right and from the drop down on the top left but nothing.

Is this a temporary issue with Apple.I'm on a Mac running OS10.9.4 and iTunes 11.3.1 Info: Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9) Jun 29, 2010 how do you list the items on the desktop as a list instead of icons Sep 21, 2009 Can a 06 Mac Pro run it? Oct 6, 2008 Just bought a couple weeks ago, 2.8ghz 8-core Mac Pro.

My only complaint is the wimpy 2600 XT that it came with. I know I could put in the 3870 or 8800GT but that would be a step down from my windows pc that I just switched from, which was running 4850. I've heard the rumors that Mac will soon support the 4800 series ATI cards but my question is will the card work on my current Mac Pro or would this upgrade only be for the new Mac Pros that everyone is guessing will come out in January? Jun 10, 2009 When I say I'd want the power of the 4870, I mostly mean gaming with that card. Now that I've typed this out, it sounds less and less like it would work.

Aug 23, 2009 I need some help getting some facts straight. I am considering upgrading from the 4870 to the 285. It's a fine idea except that the 285 is very expensive, but at least I could try and sell the 4870 and maybe get $300CAD for it. Then I thought, what about just getting a second 4870 and crossfiring them?

I have read through a good 3 or 4 threads on these forums about powering the second card, flashing PC cards and working with crossfire. That was a freaking long 3 hours of reading non-stop.

So I have these questions which I hope someone here can answer with reasonable certainty. 1) When doing crossfire, do the cards have to be very similar for them to work? If 1 card is 512 and the other 1GB will there be any advantage over just getting a card with 512? 2) If other cards of the same family work, would a crossfiring of the apple 4870 with a 4870X2 perform similar to 3 X 4870 in crossfire? 3) Could someone explain the cables and/or hardware needed to power the second card from the second optical drive slot? I think the best way to go is 1 cable from each card to the regular spot and 1 cable from each card going to the same connector in the optical bay. 4) Apparently 2 X apple 4870s don't work with crossfire.

But does this apply to combining an apple 4870 with an unflashed PC 4870? 5) I thought I read about some attempts to modify the ROM of the apple card to enable crossfire with some success. Is that true and if so where is this ROM and does it negatively impact the apple 4870 in OSX? 6) If have read in the past (I think with the PC 3870s) that if you connect a second unflashed card to an apple card with the crossfire link that the card behaves in OSX (doesn't spin it's fans wildly).

Ati 4870 Mac Pro

I don't need it to do anything in OSX except not blow up, I only care about it working in windows. I'd like to avoid flashing the PC card if I can. Feb 22, 2010 guys would a flashed 4870 from this tutorial URL Apr 7, 2010 I just bought a 4870 for my Mac Pro 1,1. Is there any advantage to keeping the 7300 GT in there, or disadvantage? It does give me a few more DVI outs if I add a third monitor, I guess. What about Aperture or other apps that use the video card - my guess is that it doesn't add anything, but I don't know. May 6, 2010 I just installed an ATI 4870 into my 2008 Mac Pro, I need a second power cable to connect the card to the logic board, does anyone know exactly what cable I have to order?

Jul 27, 2010 Shew. I currently have the 4870 and am looking to upgrade to the 5870 for two reason: 1. I have duel ACD and need the dual mini display 2. I am an avid After Effects guru and need all the punch I can get (yes i know the QaudroFX, but it's just not worth it and they never update them). How do you all think they will compare performance for price?

Any early reviews comparing them both on the PC at least? Mar 7, 2009 Is it possible, I'm considering buying the new Pro, but I just want to know whether I could install more than one Ati 4870 HD graphics card Mar 3, 2009 It's no big secret that today Apple announced that the ATI 4870 will be available sometime in the near future for the new Mac Pros and some of the other recent models. So the question is for those of us who are running a single 3870, is it worth dropping it for the 4870 or better to go 2x3870 in crossfire. This is more of a question geared towards Windows usage and not OSX since OSX doesn't support crossfire. Just a couple of weeks ago I purchased the Mac/PC edition of the 3870 from OWC and added the Accelero passive cooler to it and it's working out well. I was thinking about buying an additional 3870 to crossfire sometime in the relatively near future solely for the purpose of Windows gaming since you can get PC versions of the 3870 for so cheap. I'm guessing the Mac edition of the 4870 is going to be pricey so would the dual 3870 option make more sense?

Mar 30, 2009 Ever since the 3870 came out last year, I've been waiting to see if anyone was able to dump the ROM from the Mac version and flash a PC version with it. But it seems no one was able to do it.

How come suddenly everyone and their brother is now able to flash the PC 4870? Anyone know what the differences between the two are, that would prevent the 3870 from being flashed successfully?

Ati 4870 For Mac

I just built my hackintosh and I can't seem to get my ATI card working. I've followed the directions in the first post here and it just won't work. I installed a vanilla 10.5.6 using Boot132. Updated to 10.5.8 and I get a garbled screen at reboot.

Usually white with black checkered throughout. I can 'see' something moving if I move the mouse so I'm pretty sure it's a video problem.

When I boot into single user mode and 'rm -r ATI.' and reboot, I can get into OS X. 10.5.8 is installed but I'm stuck at 1024x768 video. I tried installing the ATI drivers - the ones that have been linked to around the net - and the ATI enabler. When I reboot, I get a black screen. Again, if I delete those ATI files, I can get into OS X.

I've tried doing a safeboot, but when in verbose mode so I can see what it's doing, I get a 'Failed to start CPU 01. Rebooting' message. I'm running a Gigabyte EP45-DS4P Core 2 Quad Q9550 Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4870 (1 gig version) The only thing I can think of at this point is that my card is non-reference and just won't work with OS X because I've seen people get this same config working with a different brand 4870. One more thing I'm going to try is to reinstall the OS X 10.5.8 update and go into safeboot and just do the ATI Enabler. But any other ideas?

For anyone interested, I've determined that the Gigabyte version of the 4870 is not compatible with OS X. Again, the Gigabyte 4870 does not work. No amount of hackery would get it working. I even flashed it and it just left me with a bricked video card. Thankfully I had backed up the ROM and could get it working again. I'm now happily running a Diamond 4890 and it works almost perfectly (still working on QE/CI support).

One more time, for teh google spiders: The Gigabyte 4870 does not work in a Hackintosh. Hopefully that'll save someone hours of frustration trying to get it to work.
